2012-13 Results Once again, the NHL was shut down in a labour dispute that lasted until early in the new year. As in 1995, the Canuck schedule was reduced to just 48 games. If there was any good news in this, it was that Ryan Kesler and David Booth would not have been ready to return from injury in October. During the off-season, the Canucks picked up free agent Jason Garrison but lost Sami Salo to free agency. When the season finally began in January 2013, Henrik and Daniel Sedin were once again counted on to lead the team with help from players like Jannik Hansen, Alex Burrows, Dan Hamhuis and Alex Edler. There was controversy in net as Cory Schneider looked like he was ready to take on the role of number one goalie with Roberto Luongo waiting for a trade. The Canucks started the season with a 2-2-2 record in their first six games before putting together a six game winning streak. Ryan Kesler returned to the lineup on February 15, but was injured again and missed another batch of games. The team had another six game winning streak in March and finally finished the season with 59 points, good enough for first place in the division and third seed in the playoffs. The Canucks met the San Jose Sharks in the first round of the playoffs. With Cory Schneider still suffering from an injury, Roberto Luongo started the first two games. The Canucks lost both games including one in overtime. In San Jose, the Canucks lost game three and then the Sharks completed the sweep with a powerplay goal in overtime. Soon after the season was over, coach Alain Vigneault was fired. Vigneault would leave the team having recorded more wins than any other Canuck coach. |
